In recent days, Kanye West – or “Ye,” as he wishes to be called now – has been around Larry Hoover Jr., the activist son of Chicago gang figure Larry Hoover. Hoover is currently serving a life sentence in a supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, for ordering a murder in 1973 and then, according to the federal government, for running a criminal enterprise behind bars. Hoover Jr., who appears on Ye’s recent album Donda, is arguing for a suspension of sentence for her father under the First Step Act, although a federal judge refused it over the summer.

On Friday night, Ye and Hoover Jr. appeared on Drink champions, a podcast co-hosted by rapper Noreaga and DJ EFN that also airs on the Diddy’s Revolt network. Ye had already appeared on the pod last week, where he confessed he’s still a Trump supporter, criticized the #MeToo movement, and opened up about his ongoing ‘war’ with Drake. During their boozy conversation, Noreaga asked Ye about the recent controversy surrounding Dave Chappelle, her longtime pal who made a number of transphobic comments during his recent stand-up special. The closest– which sparked a walkout led by LGBTQ + Netflix employees furious at their supposedly inclusive employer who aired it.

“Dude, if they don’t get the hell out of here, brother.” Cancel what? What are we canceling here? Ye asked, adding, “Dude, enough of this shit already, boy!” You just wait for someone not to affect the stock and take them out one by one to impose fear on anyone with the freedom to think. I have a blast when I see – don’t tell me what to do with your life, boy. None of you guys in Hollywood factories tell any of us what we do. This our cultural now. It’s finish. You cannot cancel any of us.

“And are you all afraid of guys running around doing what those Hollywood guys are telling you to do?” Fuck you, man! It’s finish ! He continued. “Y’all is talking about either our culture that we grew up with or yourself. No selfish and scared householders. So what are they canceling ?! “

For the record, Netflix – and the majority of Hollywood – defended Chappelle following his special, with co-CEO Ted Sarandos saying, “We try to support creative freedom and artistic expression among the artists who work at Netflix, ”and then doubling down in a memo, arguing,“ While some employees disagree, we firmly believe that on-screen content doesn’t directly translate into real-world damage. “(Does he know anything about, say, Birth of a nation or Nazi propaganda films?)

Those who spoke out against Chappelle were members of the marginalized groups he spat villainy against in his special, including members of the gay and trans communities, their supporters and a number of members of the left-wing media. So it’s a little strange to see a multibillionaire stand up for his millionaire pal against these considerably less powerful people.
