The Wall Street Journal editorial board wrote an op-ed Tuesday criticizing Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., for aggressive new regulations he has imposed on the state’s energy production amid already severe shortages .

“California can barely keep the lights on as its climate policies bite the power grid, but Governor Gavin Newsom is fearless,” the editorial board wrote. “On Friday, he signed no less than 40 — count 40 — new climate bills to amplify California’s green energy shock experience.”

Editors noted that gas prices in California are still well above the national average.

“Even though gasoline prices nationwide have fallen to an average of $3.68 a gallon, Californians are still paying $5.45 a gallon. Electricity rates in California are already more than double those of neighboring states,” he wrote. “That’s what happens when politicians try to phase out fossil fuels with a Molotov cocktail of regulations, taxes, mandates and renewable subsidies.”

Editors slammed Newsom for saying “we’re just getting started” last week.

They criticized the legislation for mandating so-called “clean electricity” to fully power 90% of the state by 2035, noting that it will require energy companies to “start distorting investment even further to achieve the new goals.

“This will require a rapid and massive expansion of battery storage, manufacturing and technology that does not exist,” they wrote.

The editors also pointed to a mandatory 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions as a troubling part of the policy that will further hamper the state’s economy.

“You almost have to wonder if California Democrats are trying to chase working-class families and businesses to ease the strain on the network and achieve their climate goals,” the editors wrote.

“Wealthy progressives would then have the state to themselves,” they continued.

The editors speculated that the climate policies could be part of an effort by Newsom to position himself as a potential 2024 presidential candidate if President Biden decides not to run. During his “60 Minutes” interview on Sunday, Biden questioned whether he planned to run. He said “it’s way too early” to determine whether he will seek re-election.
