Wrexham will face Chelsea on a pre-season tour of the United States ahead of a friendly against Manchester United

After sealing a date with Manchester United, Wrexham have attracted another Premier League side to face them in pre-season this summer.

The Red Dragons are currently battling for a place in Ligue 2 next season, as they find themselves top of the National League with just two games remaining.

Although they belong to the fifth tier of English football, the Red Dragons have attracted a new wave of fans around the world thanks to the takeover of actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020.

And now the Welsh side’s pre-season fixtures for this summer are certainly something club fans could only have dreamed of three years ago.

Premier League giants Manchester United already had a blast when they announced they would face Wrexham in pre-season in California via a hilarious video starring Sir Alex Ferguson.

But Erik ten Hag’s side will not be the only top side Wrexham will face when they are in the United States as they prepare for what could be their first return to the EFL since 2008.

On Thursday, Wrexham announced Chelsea would also play them during their time across the pond on Wednesday, July 19 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina as part of the 2023 FC Series.

Given that American-owned Man United were keen to capitalize on the excitement around Hollywood stars, it’s no surprise that compatriot and Blues owner Todd Boehly was also keen to get in on the action.

The clubs last faced each other in February 1982, with Wrexham winning 1-0 in their clash in what was known as Division Two (now the Championship).

Speaking to Wrexham’s website, manager Phil Parkinson said: “Our tour of the United States will be an exciting part of the summer preparation for the new season and something we will all be looking forward to in July.

“Having the opportunity to face a team of Chelsea’s caliber at Kenan Stadium in North Carolina will be a tremendous test for our players and will be an important part of our preparations for the 2023/24 season.

“We look forward to meeting some of the fans who have supported us so passionately from afar this season at a renowned athletics stadium.”

The club has also confirmed that there will be two more matches on July 22 on the West Coast and July 28 on the East Coast.

With a four-point lead at the top of the league on 107 points, Wrexham could be promoted against Borehamwood at the Racecourse this weekend if they were better than or equal to Notts County’s runners-up result at Maidstone.
