Madley had a rocky return to action

Referee Bobby Madley, back to top-flight action after being sacked four years ago, missed the off-ball incident but there is no hiding at VAR.

Stockley Park officials told Madley to take another look and Costa received his first Premier League red card.

Despite being famous for his disciplinary issues, the Spaniard managed to avoid being sent off to the Premier League during his three-year spell at Chelsea.

Now, however, the 34-year-old has more red cards (1) than goals (0) since returning to England as an emergency striker for Wolves.

Somehow it took until Costa’s 95th Premier League appearance to receive a red card – but perhaps things would have been different had VAR existed between 2014 and 2017.

The striker, who won two Premier League titles at Stamford Bridge, will now miss Wolves’ next three games, leaving them short of a lead once again.

It was actually Costa’s first red card of his Premier League career.
