Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Manchester United is said to be in question as the superstar ‘loses faith’ the Red Devils can win it all in the coming season.
And a talkSPORT pundit fully understands why, claiming the 37-year-old won’t want to stay at Old Trafford for another failed year.
After initially being enthusiastic about a fresh start under new manager Erik ten Hag, reports in Portugal and Spain claimed that Ronaldo now doubted any progress would be made due to the club’s lack of transfer activity.
Last week it was rumored that the striker was unhappy at Old Trafford thanks to the club’s quiet summer spell since Ten Hag’s appointment.
Record in Portugal and AS in Spain are now reporting that he will push to leave the club this summer, just a season into his two-year deal.
United are reportedly chasing several high-profile targets, including Barca midfielder Frenkie de Jong and several Ajax players, but no deal has yet been agreed.
Meanwhile, rivals Liverpool and Man City have both gone from strength to strength, and Ronaldo would see this as a sign that it will be another trophyless season at Man United again.
Record claims Ronaldo ‘fears Ten Hag doesn’t have the weapons to fight for titles’ and ‘doesn’t want to waste’ the final years of his storied career at a club where he feels he can’t add to his trophy.
The AS report also suggested Bayern Munich as a possible next destination for Ronaldo, where he would replace Robert Lewandowski after Barcelona finally submitted a £34million bid for the Polish goal machine.
Sky Germany have since claimed the Bundesliga champions are not interested.
Bayern would be an obvious choice, however, should Ronaldo seek one final transfer to bolster his trophy cabinet before hanging up his boots.
The Bavarians have won ten straight Bundesliga titles and regularly challenge for European and domestic honours, and the signings of Sadio Mane from Liverpool and possibly also Ronaldo from Man United would surely see them push to maintain their dominance in Germany this season.
The report in Record adds that Ronaldo gave United an ultimatum – ‘up your game or I’m leaving’.
And it’s a position talkSPORT pundit and former England international Trevor Sinclair understands, saying there’s no reason the Portuguese hero should stay at Old Trafford.
He told talkSPORT Breakfast: “Manchester United want to keep Ronaldo, Ten Hag want to work with him, but at the moment Ronaldo is looking at the team and thinking, ‘Why would I want to stay?
“This team is not going to come close to the top four.
“He’s not going to join a club bigger than Manchester United, but what he will do is score goals wherever he goes.
“Maybe it’s the year he says, ‘You know what, I’ve loved running the show in European football for 20 years, I might want to go to America and enjoy my life’.
“I’m not saying that’s the case, but why would you want to be at Manchester United with the current squad they have, fighting against the top teams and getting beaten left, right and centre?
“I don’t think Ronaldo wants another year like this, and I think he’s right to be restless and put some pressure on Manchester United.”
The news comes after Ronaldo admitted he was excited about Ten Hag’s United overhaul but said the Dutchman ‘needs time’.
However, now it seems his patience is running out.
“What I know about Ten Hag is that he’s done a fantastic job for Ajax, he’s an experienced coach, but we have to give him time,” Ronaldo told Man’s website. United after the appointment of the new manager.
“Things have to change as he wishes. I hope we are successful, of course, because if you are successful, all of Manchester is going to be successful too. I wish him the best.
“We are happy and excited, not only as players but also as supporters. I wish him the best and believe that next year we will win trophies.
