It was a match between two Grand Slam champions that saw huge changes in momentum, but it was the British star who came out on top in his third Slam and first-ever tournament appearance.
“It was a tough game for a first round,” Raducanu said.
“I knew there would be long rallies because his athleticism is on point. I had to work extremely hard for these points. Going out for the first set, I played very good tennis, but of course there was always adversity. I’m happy to have regrouped in the third set.
Next up for Raducanu is a match against Danka Kovinic, the 27-year-old who got through Jang Su-jeong in three sets. The Briton will be a big favorite for the clash, and victory would set up a potential third-round match against her idol Simona Halep.
