Recently acquired, the English-language newspaper Kyiv Post saw all its journalists dismissed and its publication suspended, which provoked indignant reactions from Western chancelleries.

Several Western embassies warned Ukraine on November 9 after the country’s oldest English-language newspaper was suspended, Kyiv Post, which journalists accused the owner of interfering with freedom of expression.

An “important role” in democracy

“It was the first English-speaking source for most foreigners – something Ukraine now risks losing, with consequences,” EU Ambassador to Ukraine Matti Maasikas wrote on Twitter.

Her British counterpart Melinda Simmons declared herself on Twitter “surprised” by the “sudden” announcement of the newspaper’s suspension, “an example of independent journalism” which “has played an important role in supporting reforms and democracy” in Ukraine.

“Not a good day for free media,” she continued, while her Swedish colleague Tobias Thyber on Twitter stressed the need to “defend free and independent media in Ukraine”.

“For 26 years, the Kyiv Post is one of Ukraine’s most important independent media voices in all languages and a tireless standard-bearer of journalistic standards, ”the US Embassy said on Twitter, hoping“ that a way [pourrait] be found to allow the newspaper to continue to play this role ”.

All licensed journalists

Originally from Syria, Adnan Kivan, a construction tycoon who bought the Kyiv Post three years ago, on Nov. 8 said in a statement that the newspaper would immediately close “for a short period”, promising to reopen it “bigger and better.”

Its journalists, who were all fired, then issued a joint statement denouncing an attempt by the owner to “get rid” of “inconvenient, fair and honest” professionals and accusing Adnan Kivan of having already recently attempted to “undermine” “editorial independence”.
