West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen and Leicester’s James Justin get first England call-ups, with Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham in the squad but Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe, Tottenham defender Eric Dier and Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson are absent

West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen has received his first England call-up after a fantastic season both domestically and in Europe for David Moyes’ side.

Gareth Southgate has named his squad for Nations League matches against Hungary, Italy and Germany, with Leicester’s Bowen and James Justin for the first time.

Injury prevented Bowen from receiving a call-up during the last international break but he has now been rewarded after a great season for the Hammers

Justin’s call-up is also long overdue after impressing Leicester over the past two years.

Bowen has scored 12 goals and registered 12 assists in the Premier League this season, while scoring three goals in West Ham’s Europa League campaign which saw them reach the semi-finals.

He was also nominated for the Premier League Player of the Season, alongside Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne.

And, after Southgate said the former Hull City striker was “in the frame” when he picked his final team, he was finally rewarded with his first international call-up.

Justin could also get his first England cap, having been close to being called up in 2020, until an ACL injury caused him to miss nearly a year of football.

However, since his return earlier this year, the full-back has returned to his best, making seven appearances for the Foxes under Brendan Rodgers.

He is one of five right-backs in the squad alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker, which means he will have to fight a lot of competition to get to the World Cup later this year.

Southgate has clearly watched a lot of Serie A this season, as Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori get call-ups

England will face Italy in a Euro 2020 final rematch

But the 24-year-old’s ability to play on both flanks and in central midfield may mean Southgate chooses to take him to Qatar for his versatility.

There are also recalls to the Three Lions squad for Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham, who are both plying their trades in Italy for AC Milan and Roma, respectively.

Tomori has just won Milan’s first Scudetto in 11 years, while Abraham has scored 17 Serie A goals this season, making him England’s all-time top scorer in the Italian top flight.

New Premier League champions Walker, John Stones and Jack Grealish are also included.

Champions League runner-up Alexander-Arnold is in the squad, but his Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has unexpectedly not been selected.

Emile Smith Rowe of Arsenal, Tyrick Mitchell of Crystal Palace and Tyrone Mings and Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa are the other players who have not made this squad despite the Three Lions’ recent appearances.

Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho are missing out again after disappointing seasons for the Red Devils.

There is no room for Leicester midfielder James Maddison, who has enjoyed an impressive individual campaign.

Tottenham defender Eric Dier is also a surprising omission, having played a key role in Spurs’ good run under Antonio Conte which saw them secure a place in the top four.

Dier has been imperious at the heart of the Spurs defense under Conte but is not in the England squad

Having impressed in the middle of a back three – something Southgate has used frequently since taking over – some will think he is a better option than Wolves’ Conor Coady or the inexperienced Marc Guehi.

Central midfielders Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice have both been linked with moves away from Leeds and West Ham this summer, and these internationals could be their last chance to impress potential suitors.

England will play four times in ten days next month, all in the Nations League.

They will face Hungary twice, away on June 4 and at home on June 14.

Between those clashes, they travel to rivals Germany on June 7 and host their Euro 2020 final winners in Italy on June 11.
