During Friday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Jose Diaz-Balart Reports,” Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX) argued that “with the exception of family separation, virtually all of Trump’s border policies are still in effect. place today”. And things on the border have gotten worse because of Republican policies.
Escobar said, “Republicans keep complaining that they want Trump’s policies reinstated. The fact is, Jose, with the exception of family separation, virtually all of Trump’s border policies are still in place today. And not only are we not seeing a slowdown in migration, not only are we [not] see things — a more orderly process at the border, but we actually see the opposite. Why is that? Well, I spoke at length to my community. I published an editorial in last Sunday’s edition El Paso times, saying that really what we see at the border is the result of Republican strategy, which is, for the past few decades, Republicans have wanted to deal with immigration only at the border. They refuse to open legal avenues. They refuse to do their job and to legislate on immigration. In fact, Jose, as you and I have talked about, the last time Congress acted on immigration was almost 30 years ago. And 30 years ago, what happened was that Congress passed and President Clinton signed on, limiting legal avenues. So we went in the opposite direction. We went in the Republican direction, limiting legal avenues and border policies only. It’s a fail. And that’s why we see what we see today at the border.
