Watch 2024: CPAC attendees pick favorite presidential candidate as Trump, DeSantis remains popular

Fox News Digital asked Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) attendees a simple question in Dallas, Texas: Who do you want at the top of the White House Republican ticket in 2024?

Former President Trump, who has repeatedly teased another race in 2024, appeared to be the heavy favorite. However, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, R. was also a popular pick.

“Trump, full stop, end of conversation,” a participant told Fox News Digital.

One attendee replied “Trump,” before his girlfriend called him, and he hesitantly admitted that he prefers the governor of Florida these days.

“I like DeSantis more than Trump, I know that’s the opposite opinion,” he said.

One participant preferred a woman, saying former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, R., would make excellent candidates. But for just about everyone, there were only two choices, or in one case, three.

“Trump, DeSantis, [Ted] Cruz, I’d take any of them,” one attendee said.

Other participants wanted a Trump-DeSantis unity ticket, which is unlikely but an optimal scenario for many conservatives. The reaction received by Fox News Digital mirrors a mock poll conducted earlier this year at CPAC in Orlando when Trump captured 59% of the votes cast. DeSantis came in far behind with 28%, while no one else among the 19 names on the ballot reached 2%.

AHEAD OF TRUMP’S RALLY IN ARIZONA, VOTERS SHARE IF THEY WANT FORMER PRESIDENT TO RACE AGAIN

The opinion of CPAC Texas attendees will become clearer when the results of the GOP presidential nomination straw poll are announced. Trump sits atop the ballot with 20 other Republicans considered potential candidates for the White House in the 2024 election. CPAC attendees can participate using the event app.

In addition to Trump and DeSantis, the CPAC Texas straw ballot will include an array of other candidates, including Haley, Noem, Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee; former Vice President Mike Pence; Cruz, who was Trump’s runner-up in the 2016 Republican presidential primaries; and Sense. Marco Rubio of Florida and Rand Paul of Kentucky, two other 2016 presidential candidates.

As 2024 speculation intensifies, all eyes are on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump to see what they decide. DeSantis said he was focused on his re-election campaign in Florida, while Trump hinted he would seek the White House for the third time.

Other prominent Republicans on the list include Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, R., and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Earlier Friday, DeSantis did not say whether he would support Trump in 2024 if the former president ran again.

“People have asked me about it, probably a thousand different times,” DeSantis told Fox News. “Basically, I’m keeping my eye on the ball here in Florida…I’m doing 2022…I have a campaign coming up.”
