Virgil van Dijk showed his class after Liverpool’s FA Cup victory over Shrewsbury on Sunday by walking into the opposing team’s dressing room and talking to the players.

The Reds sent the League One side with a 4-1 win at Anfield but were in trouble after half an hour when Daniel Udoh gave the away side a shock lead.

However, teenage star Kaide Gordon equalized with a compound finish before Fabinho put Liverpool 2-1 with a penalty. Goals from Roberto Firmino in the second half and a second from Fabinho sealed their place in the fourth round.

Van Dijk, who played the draw, was one of the big stars to start against Shrewsbury but showed great humility to chat with the Shrewsbury players full time.

“Virgil van Dijk came to our locker room after, congratulated everyone, said bravo, brought his shirt, shook his hand and I thought it was absolutely the best, the best,” said Shrews boss Steve Cotterill.

“Not only is he a top player, he’s a gentleman. It’s a very good experience for our players today to go through this. You can’t walk away from here and not think this is a special football club.

Meanwhile, Shrewsbury defender Elliott Bennett tweeted: “Chic on and off the pitch. Rolls Royce of a player and without a doubt the best center-back in the world. Touch if the class comes in to see the boys and give our goalie hero his jersey! Correct.”

A number of young Reds players were also knocked out – Tyler Morton, Conor Bradley and Elijah Dixon-Bonner coped well, but Gordon had the most memorable day.

The 17-year-old’s goal on his FA Cup debut saw him become Liverpool’s second youngest goalscorer in the competition behind Ben Woodburn.

“Kaide in terms of finish is no doubt his finish is exceptional but everything else he is still a child,” said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

“When he’s in these situations he’s really calm. I’m not saying he will always score in these situations the rest of his career, but more often.

“He’s got a nose for that. I know he is Liverpool’s second youngest goalscorer which is absolutely exceptional, but there is a long way to go.

“No problem, Kaide has time, he will have his minutes here and there.”

Gordon and other Liverpool youngsters could have their chance in the next round, with Liverpool set to face Cardiff at Anfield. The meetings will take place on the weekend of February 4 to 5.
