Elected “Coach of the Year” by the Boxing Writers Association of America in 2011, Virgil Hunter is one of the great sports coaches.
He has coached countless world champions including Andre Ward, Amir Khan, Andre Berto and Abner Mares among others.
That being said, after Joshua Buatsi’s impressive win over Craig Richards last night, Hunter believes the Briton is second only to Andre Ward in terms of fighters he has trained.
“I think at this point he’s the second best fighter I’ve had,” Hunter said at the post-fight press conference.
“I had good fighters, like Amir, but they weren’t dedicated like Josh and I will take the dedication he gives and that’s what makes me excited to train him.
“So because of his dedication, coming to the United States for five months is a serious sacrifice, I even opened my house to him, he is so dedicated, so I have him second on the list behind Andre.
“Everyone else I trained was good fighters, but there were always issues…he has no issues, he just has straight forward dedication and determination.
“He’s a good lad and a solid man and that says a lot for him and that’s why I love having him and want the best for him.”

That’s a huge compliment for Buatsi considering he only has 16 fights in his professional career and yet he already rubs shoulders with Ward who was an Olympic gold medalist and unified world champion at both super middleweight and light heavyweights.
Buatsi started training with Hunter last year and it looks like the pair are working well together as the Briton looked excellent in his fight with Richards.
As for his next challenge, Buatsi could have a shot at winning the WBA world title from Dmitry Bivol, if the Russian doesn’t take Canelo back next.
According to Canelo’s promoter Eddie Hearn, it looks like the Mexican will fight Gennady Golovkin next September.
This will open up Bivol for a fight later this year and it looks like Buatsi is on the front line.
