Welcome to the Vinsanity scale! In honor of one of the greatest dunkers in NBA history, the Vinsanity scale rates dunks on a scale of 1 to 4. Similar to the Horry scale, the dunk in question is rated in depending on the situation, difficulty, and celebration of the game to answer a question: Would that make Half Man, Half Amazing proud?
In the season’s first meeting between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Boston Celtics, Timberwolves goaltender Jaylen Nowell threw an absolute hammer on the Celtics in the fourth quarter.
The Timberwolves have struggled with COVID-related injuries and absences all season. They currently have seven players in league health and safety protocols, including Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell. That misfortune has allowed third-year goaltender Jaylen Nowell to stand up for the team as they try to make their way through this part of the season. Coming into the game against Boston, the Timberwolves lost two games in a row and had to return to the winning column.
The dunk came early in the fourth quarter with a game tied at 79. Nathan Knight tried to dribble from the 3-point line but ran into a wall of Celtics defenders. He returned it to Jordan McLaughlin who immediately sent it to a growing Nowell.
Two dribbles and Nowell was on the edge. Poor Jabari Parker didn’t stand a chance.
Go now. This is not your garden variety slam. He threw it away viciously. And no, Parker doesn’t have the athleticism he once had, but he’s still 6ft 8in in front of you and Nowell is only 6ft 4in. Nowell knew exactly what he was going to do when he returned the ball just outside the restricted area.
Nowell’s teammates burst onto the bench and Nowell himself did a bit of demagoguery and flexing in their direction. Apparently, the entire Target Center stood in unison. This dunk played a huge role in the rise of the T’Wolves to close the victory.
Here is another angle of the dunk.
For me, this dunk had all the necessary elements to make it a good dunk.
The degree of difficulty was there. It was vicious and Wolves ended a two-game losing streak with the win. Nowell finished the game with 29 points, six rebounds and three assists.
He gets a full Four Vinsanities.
