Vinicius Jr and Thibaut Courtois break Liverpool hearts as Real Madrid win Champions League after chaotic scenes saw final delayed

Real Madrid won the Champions League with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool at the Stade de France in Paris.

Vinicius Jr surged in the 59th minute to end the Reds’ hopes of a hat-trick, with Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Coirtois making a number of sensational saves.

It’s a 14th European title for the Spanish giants – but the game will be overshadowed by chaotic scenes which saw the game delayed by 36 minutes.

Liverpool fans were caught up in huge queues, with police using tear gas and pepper spray, with fallout over the outrageous security concerns that were to rumble on.

When the game finally started, with some fans still stuck off the pitch, the Reds dominated for long stretches but came up against an unbeatable Courtois.

Jim Proudfoot of talkSPORT said: “He’s man of the match. If Real Madrid wins, they will build statues for him.

Karim Benzema was disallowed a goal for offside after a lengthy VAR check, before Vinicius netted the winner in the second half.

Valverde smashed an effort through goal and while Trent Alexander-Arnold was caught napping, Vinicius Jr pounced.

Andy Townsend of talkSPORT said: “You can argue Trent may have died out a bit at the far post.

“In fairness to Trent, he should have come on a little quicker, but it was a shot that went through the penalty area, he was going out for a throw!

“The striker played while the defender was caught on his heels.”

It was the heartbreaking end to a momentous season for Liverpool, who won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup before being rocketed to the Premier League title by one point and losing in the French capital.
