Video shows amusement park ride malfunction, sending more than a dozen riders hurtling 50ft to the ground

Video released on Sunday evening appears to show part of an amusement park ride in India crashing to the ground with dozens of people on board.

The ride was a “drop tower” attraction that broke out during a fairground in Mohali, a district in the Indian state of Punjab, according to local network NDTV. It malfunctioned around 9:15 p.m. Sunday, the broadcaster reported.

The attraction featured a tower and a circular platform, which rotated as you climbed the tower. When he reached the top, he dropped sharply, crashing into the bottom of the ride.

A clip of the incident was tweeted by Nikhil Choudhary, a reporter for Hindi-language television channel TV9, who wrote that 16 women and children were hospitalized following the incident.

About 50 people were on board the 50ft-tall attraction, local English-language newspaper Business Standard reported. No deaths were reported on Sunday evening.

The Hindustan Times reported that several children as young as 10 were being treated at Fortis Hospital, a medical facility near the fair.

Several media including NDTV and the Hindustan Times reported that there were no waiting ambulances at the fair, citing witnesses at the fair.

Fair organizers blamed a “technical problem” on the accident and said they would cooperate with the police, according to the Hindustan Times.

Mohali Deputy Police Commissioner Amit Talwar said authorities would launch an investigation and take “strict action”, the newspaper wrote. Police said the fair was due to end on Sunday, but organizers had been given an extension until September 11, by several outlets.

The Mohali Deputy Commissioner of Police’s office did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
