Video appears to show British F-35 fighter jet crashing into Mediterranean in take-off accident

A new video posted on Twitter claims to show the British F-35 fighter plane crashing into water during takeoff as its pilot ejects, according to the BBC.

The plane, which was docked on the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, crashed in the Mediterranean Sea on November 17, 2021, around 10 a.m. GMT, and it was the first time the UK has lost a of its 24 F-35 fighter jets, according to the report.

The video, job by Twitter user @ sebh1981, shows a recording of what appears to be security footage of the crash.

The user told Insider that he obtained the video from a Royal Navy WhatsApp group and said the original footage came from the vessel’s visual surveillance system. Insider could not immediately confirm the authenticity of the video or the veracity of the claims.

“We are aware of a video circulating online,” the Defense Ministry said. PA media reporter Henry Jones. “It is too early to comment on the potential causes of this incident.”

The Defense Ministry continued, “Recovery efforts are ongoing and the Defense Accident Investigation Directorate will report its preliminary findings in due course.”

Neither the Department of Defense nor the Royal Navy immediately responded to Insider’s request for comment.

The video shows the plane losing speed as it climbs onto the runway, so much so that it immediately falls instead of taking off. The pilot’s parachute is visible as it ejects and smoke rises around the ramp and the sea.

The BBC report added that the Defense Ministry had confirmed that the pilot survived and was rescued. The Defense Ministry also told the BBC that an investigation is still ongoing as crews are still trying to recover parts of sensitive high-tech parts of the plane.

Defense Secretary Ben Wallace also told the BBC that the F-35 fell shortly after take off from the aircraft carrier and that operational and training flights continued on the ship despite the incident.
