Some establishments welcoming the elderly organize meetings with pets. Caresses, kisses or care given to these furry or feathered visitors provide well-being to their residents… Extract from the magazine “We, the Europeans” broadcast on Sunday May 22, 2022 at 10:25 a.m. on France 3.
The benefits of pets on the health and morale of their owners are now well known because they have been measured. Rabbits, dogs or ponies have even become the best allies of therapists working in retirement homes. That day, an animal mediation workshop is held in one of them.
Cutting vegetables to feed rabbits or brush a dog helps develop concentration and motor skills. So, what does Janine Brouard, 89, like about this activity? “To caress them and when we give them cakes, it’s a big party”she answers the magazine “We, the Europeans” (replay).
“The animal facing them is a living being”
“We mainly work on behavioral disorders since we are faced with people who have severe cognitive disorders that cause disorders such as anxiety, depression, withdrawal…” explains Caroline Laruffa, animal mediation worker.
“The animal in front of them is a being of life. It allows them to have a totally different behavior and sometimes to put all these troubles aside. These people can thus have moments of pleasure and certain appeasement”she told journalist Eléonore Gay.
