Parts of the US east coast could be affected by severe flooding, with forecasters predicting some states could experience the worst tidal flooding in nearly two decades.
Strong winds push water into Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay, moving water inland and inundating parts of Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and New Jersey.
Flood warnings have been issued from Virginia to New Jersey, including residents of Washington DC, Baltimore and Philadelphia.
The storms could cause the region’s worst flooding since Hurricane Isabel in 2003, the National Weather Service has warned.
“One of the biggest tidal events of the past 10 to 20 years (possibly since Hurricane Isabel in some places) is expected Friday and Saturday. Those along the coasts should be prepared for a flood. exceptional! ” the weather service said in a tweet.
The governor of Maryland has declared a state of emergency in areas subject to flood warnings, while the Baltimore Department of Transportation is distributing sandbags to residents.
“Even if you are used to damaging flooding, it is much more serious and could be much more damaging over the next 24 hours,” Gov. Larry Hogan said early Friday evening.
“We are taking this step to mobilize all necessary state resources and assist local jurisdictions in their response efforts.”
The declaration of a state of emergency includes Baltimore City and the following counties: Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Caroline, Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Harford, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Prince George’s, Somerset, St. Mary’s, Talbot, Wicomico and Worcester.
Washington is facing flooding caused by winds pushing water from the Potomac River and heavy rains as well.
The precipitation alone is expected to cause “streams and streams to rise until late afternoon (Friday),” the weather service said.
Water flooded the streets near City Dock in downtown Annapolis, Maryland on Friday morning.
“It’s raining a lot right now,” said Leslie Butler, who had visited Annapolis for the day with her children and stopped near City Dock during their visit.
“These are crazy floods. I’ve never seen this before.”
The City of Annapolis Emergency Management Office has warned people to be prepared for the possibility of extended road closures over the weekend.
