Ukraine offers up to $1m to Russian defectors with plane or warship

Ukraine has passed a law offering up to $1 million to Russian defectors who bring a fighter jet or warship with them.

Smaller amounts would be distributed to defectors along with other wanted gear. Ukraine’s leaders aim to use law – and money – to capitalize on the widely reported low morale of Russian troops.

A kind of government shopping list was posted on Twitter by Euan MacDonald, editor of The New Voice of Ukraine.

In addition to money, defectors renouncing Russian equipment are offered “secrecy, a safe stay in Ukraine and help in obtaining new documents and an exit to a third country”.

The first deputy speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, Oleksandr Kornienko, said in a statement that the money will be “an additional incentive” for the “demoralized occupiers to lay down their arms”.
