The UK on Friday hit Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “inner circle” with a fresh round of sanctions against his ex-wife and alleged girlfriend as he continues his deadly war in Ukraine.
“Official documents list President Putin’s modest assets, including: a small apartment in St. Petersburg, 2 1950s Soviet-era cars, a trailer and a small garage,” the UK Foreign Office said in a statement. a press release announcing the sanctions. “In reality, Putin relies on his network of family, childhood friends and select elites who have benefited from his rule and who, in turn, support his lifestyle.”

“Today’s sanctions will hit this cabal which owes Putin its wealth and power, and which in turn will support Putin and his war machine,” the statement concluded.
Since the start of the war almost three months ago, the UK has imposed £117 billion in sanctions on Russian entities, individuals and oligarchs.
Western nations have pursued the Kremlin by targeting its wealthy friends and their assets by seizing mega yachts in the Mediterranean and imposing travel bans.

“We are exposing and targeting the shady network that supports Putin’s luxurious lifestyle and tightens the noose on those around him,” Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said. “We will continue to impose sanctions on all those who aided and abetted Putin’s aggression until Ukraine prevails.”
The sanctions cite four cousins of Putin whose businesses have apparent ties to the Kremlin and former First Lady and ex-wife of Putin, Lyudmila Ocheretnaya, who, despite their divorce in 2014, allegedly benefited from “relations preferential trade with public entities”.

Putin’s alleged mistress, former gymnast Alina Kabaeva, and her grandmother who is said to have been “given a luxury apartment in Moscow” were among those targeted on Friday.
Five other family friends and businessmen with ties to Putin were also listed under the new sanctions.
