Trump endorses new RNC chair and Lara Trump as co-chair

This endorsement does not mean that Whatley or Lara Trump will automatically be given these positions. The committee must hold a vote among its members if McDaniel resigns, as she is expected to do soon after the South Carolina primary on February 24. But this will likely be just a formality, as party members are almost certain to support the preferences of the nominee as presidential nominee.

As part of his efforts to restructure the RNC, Trump will also tap Chris LaCivita to serve as RNC operations director, according to the GOP operative, who was granted anonymity to speak freely. LaCivita will also retain his role as co-campaign manager of the Trump campaign. The personnel changes will take effect as soon as a new president takes office.

“The RNC MUST be a good partner in the presidential election. He must do the job we expect of the national Party and do it perfectly,” Trump said in a statement. “That means helping to ensure fair and transparent elections across the country, making voting possible everywhere – even in parts of the country where it won’t be easy – and working with my campaign, as the presumptive Republican nominee for president, to win this election and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Trump’s choice of Whatley was made, in part, because of North Carolinians’ attention to one of the former president’s pet causes: baseless claims of voter fraud. Whatley argued that elections are prone to fraud. He also defended Trump for his involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol siege, emphasizing that the rioters — not the president at the time — were responsible.

Whatley also pushed to censure Sen. Richard Burr for his decision to vote for Trump’s second impeachment.

The changes stem from conversations between Trump and his advisers in recent weeks about the future of the RNC.

In his new role, LaCivita will split his time between Trump’s headquarters in Palm Beach, Florida, and the RNC offices in Washington, DC. LaCivita, a former executive director of the Virginia GOP who consulted with the RNC during the 2016 election, will take on the role of focusing the committee on battleground states.

The New York Times and Fox News earlier reported Trump’s expected support for Whatley.
