Trip to Disney Pixar movie ‘Lightyear’ canceled after parents upset over gay kiss

A kiss in a children’s movie sparks controversy.

A parent said it led to their child’s summer camp being canceled when he went to the movies.

It’s all about the new Disney Pixar film “Lightyear” which includes a brief scene of two animated female characters kissing.

Thomas Felke, who was upset, emailed WINK News to complain that Collier County Parks and Recreation had suddenly canceled a field trip to see the show. He says he sees it as a form of discrimination against the LGBTQ community.

“Films and the arts are representations of real life. That’s what we had here. This is what we had the opportunity to show our children. And we took it away from them,” Felke said.

Felke is the father of a child aged 5 and 11.

Felke said a camp counselor told her family the movie trip was canceled after some parents complained.

He believes that parents are sending all children the wrong message.

“Imagine the message sent to kids who identify as part of the LGBTQIA population or, you know, who have same-sex families. And so that’s, that’s the thing that really troubled me about it” , Felke said.

Collier County told WINK News in a statement that due to staffing issues, Parks and Rec could not give parents the option to take their children to the movies or skip it. So they canceled instead.

“It wasn’t something graphic, there wasn’t something violent. It was just a true representation of people who were in love,” Felke said.
