The Indian meteorological department has issued a red alert for Chennai and seven other districts in Tamil Nadu because there is no respite from the rains. IMD predicted thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy precipitation in a few places with extremely heavy falls in isolated places today.

Precipitation recorded between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is abundant and between 115.6 and 204.4 is very abundant. Anything over 204.4mm is considered extremely heavy rain.
