Thomas Rhett wants fans to know that his marriage isn’t perfect.
The country music star explained that he doesn’t think his marriage is always a “relationship goal” in a recent interview with The Associated Press.
“Along the way people were saying she and I were ‘relationship goals’ or ‘your love is like rainbows and butterflies,’ and I’m sitting there saying, ‘That’s sometimes , but it’s not much either,'” Rhett told The Associated Press.
“On this record, when you listen to songs like ‘The Hill’ and ‘Angels,’ those are the types of songs that I try to find a different way of saying, ‘It’s not perfect,'” said he continued.

Rhett stressed that the relationship he has with his wife Lauren Akins is not “unattainable” but requires “work”.
“Please don’t look at our relationship as something out of reach because it completely is,” Rhett said. “It just takes work. These songs describe the work that we’ve done. As hard as it may be to maintain this as ‘we’re a perfect couple’, I think over the past two years we’ve just figured it out. that we just aren’t.”
“Being able to talk openly about the issues we’ve had in our marriage, how difficult parenting is, and trying to build relationships with other parents and married couples. It’s definitely been very invigorating for us.”
Rhett and Akins married in 2012 and share four children.

Akins previously shared Rhett’s sentiment while promoting her 2020 memoir.
“It’s so easy to look at our family and our marriage from the outside and see what seems like a perfect, happy family, but it’s just not realistic,” she told E! News at the time.
It inspired her to “share the struggles of getting there or the struggles that we still have now, and just to be real and open with people so they don’t look at us and be like, ‘Oh, they’ve got it all. together they ‘re so perfect,’ because that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Akins further explained that she felt “pressure” when people referred to her relationship with Rhett as “couple goals.”
“I feel pressure when people identify us as this couple because it’s just not true,” she told the outlet. “We don’t have a perfect marriage. I love our marriage and I love being married to it.”
“We have a really, really sweet life together, but we fight like every other couple. We struggle like every other couple…It’s almost freeing for me to be able to share that side of things so that the people can see that having a healthy relationship is extremely achievable, it’s not going to be like everyone else.”
