CCTV footage from October 12, 2022 at the Car Care Auto Spa in Portage Park shows the business owner taking a gun from a suspected armed robber and the unarmed suspect then fleeing.
ABC 7 reports that the owner of the business, James Suh, was behind the counter around 7:00 p.m. when the suspected thief entered the store.
Suh was looking down at the time, then heard the suspect say, “Give me all your money.” Suh said he looked up and saw the alleged thief pointing a gun at his face.
Suh tried to buy time by trying to defuse the tense moment, then noticed the suspect’s gun was jammed. The suspect also noticed.
Suh said, “He kinda tried to put his gun away and it looked like it got stuck or the side was locked.”
That’s why Suh reached out and grabbed the suspect’s wrist and took the gun away.
Suh said, “Once I pulled it out of his hand, I just wanted to push him away, and then he ran out of here”:
NBC 5 notes that Suh was on a conference call when the suspect first entered the building, which is why he didn’t notice the suspect until the robbery demands began.
“This guy was clearly not a professional; he didn’t know what he was doing. I don’t know what his situation is. Maybe he felt hopeless and had no choice but to go out and do this.
