There’s no way Manchin, Schumer’s reckless tax-and-spend proposal will get my support

It is easier to believe that the Taliban did not know that the leader of Al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, lived in Kabul in a house belonging to a senior official of the second Taliban commander than to believe that the “Law on the Inflation Reduction” from the Democrats will actually reduce inflation. .

To say I’m opposed to Manchin-Schumer’s latest tax-and-spend proposal is an understatement.

My point is simple. The American rescue plan, adopted last year, did not save the economy. The Inflation Reduction Act, which is expected to be passed and enacted very soon, will not reduce inflation.

GRAHAM TORCHE MANCHIN-SCHUMER’S INFLATION REDUCTION ACT: IT’S A “FRAUD”, WHICH WILL ACT EVERYTHING

If you don’t believe me, listen to outside organizations like Penn Wharton and the Congressional Budget Office sound the alarm.

This legislation is not only deceitful, flawed and bad for Americans, it is procedurally dangerous to the future of the US Senate.

According to Penn Wharton’s budget model — a measure Sen. Manchin has previously said he trusts — the bill increases inflation. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act” would have a negligible effect on inflation, whether good or bad. These are hardly ringing endorsements in the effort to sell the legislation as an inflation reducer.

On the other hand, on tax increases, the results are very clear. According to the nonpartisan joint committee on taxation, the bill includes billions of dollars in taxes that will be passed on to consumers. The legislation takes money out of the pockets of Americans who are already struggling to make ends meet due to Biden’s record inflation, especially those earning well under $400,000 a year.

MANCHIN CLAIMS DEMOCRATIC SOCIAL SPENDING AND TAX BILL IS FILLED WITH GOP PRIORITIES

In addition to passing on the increased costs to the American consumer, the bill drives up gasoline prices by increasing gasoline taxes at a time when motorists can least afford it. Under this proposal, Democrats impose a tax of 16.4 cents on a barrel of imported oil, resurrecting a tax that expired in 1995. Previously, the tax was 9.7 cents. It amounts to 16.4 cents, adding billions of dollars in increases to gasoline production. It’s not a good idea to raise gas taxes during a recession.

I want it to be on record and perfectly clear that when it comes time to fund the government through an ongoing resolution – I will gladly do that – but I will not support an ongoing resolution that has political fallout even on the policies with which I agree.

The bill also includes a $27 billion “green bank,” money for the IRS to audit middle-class Americans, tax hikes during a recession, ObamaCare grants for the wealthy, and an increase in domestic energy production costs.

This legislation is not only deceitful, flawed and bad for Americans, it is procedurally dangerous to the future of the US Senate.

THE MANCHIN-SCHUMER INFLATION REDUCTION ACT IS REALLY THE MANCHINING REDUCTION ACT

The full Manchin-Schumer package is contained in two separate legislative vehicles – reconciliation and a continuing future resolution.

Without going into too much detail about Senate procedures, most provisions supported by the liberal left can go through the Senate via reconciliation, a little-used process that only requires a majority vote of 50 senators. If all Democrats hang in there, which is likely, this reckless tax and spending bill will pass the Senate, with only Democrats voting in favour.

The second part of Manchin-Schumer is a side deal to streamline the licensing and opening of certain oil and gas pipelines. It will be part of an ongoing resolution that requires 60 votes to pass, meaning at least 10 Republicans will need to support.

It looks like the Senate Democrats promised to make the policy deal with Senator Manchin by putting all the energy expansion and allowing the initiatives in the continuing resolution because they couldn’t fit it cleanly into this bill. budgetary.

MANCHIN-SCHUMER SPENDING BILL COULD ELIMINATE 30,000 JOBS, NEW ANALYSIS SHOWS

Think ObamaCare’s “Cornhusker Kickback” on an ongoing resolution. This is a dangerous precedent to set as it erodes minority rights.

I want it to be on record and perfectly clear that when it comes time to fund the government through an ongoing resolution – I will gladly do that – but I will not support an ongoing resolution that has political fallout even on the policies with which I agree.

I encourage all of my fellow Republicans to submit state-specific power generation proposals. Challenge our fellow Democrats that if we want to change energy policy in one area, let’s change it in all areas. Every state should benefit from it. All boats must come up, not just one or two.

I doubt the radical left will allow or vote for meaningful power generation ideas like this. It is imperative that we do not legitimize this process because there will be no end.

The best way forward is for the government to get unconditional funding and stop playing politics on ongoing resolutions. If we legitimize this, over time reconciliation and government funding policy initiatives will cause significant damage to minority rights.

Manchin-Schumer is bad policy and does enough damage on its own. The last thing we should be doing is making the problem worse, which is exactly what this latest backdoor legislative maneuver seeks to do.

Personally, I like Senators Manchin and Sinema. On occasion, both defended the institution of the Senate, preserving legislative filibuster under extreme pressure.

Senator Manchin hails from one of the reddest states in the country and Senator Sinema truly represents a purple state. I worked with both on infrastructure, legislation to keep guns out of the hands of unstable people, and tried to move the Senate forward, together. Their latest efforts to join Senator Schumer in passing this legislation are ill-conceived, irresponsible, and will create new burdens for the American people at a time when they can least afford it.

Although I have shown a willingness to work with them, I have the same willingness to oppose bad ideas no matter where they come from.

This is why I will not support the use of the continuing resolution as a political reward vehicle, because going that route fundamentally changes the Senate.
