“The worst failure I have ever seen in the Champions League”

Shakhtar Donetsk striker Danylo Sikan will want to avoid all social media following his horrific Champions League failure on Tuesday night.

The substitute squandered a golden chance to earn all three points but a 1-1 draw means they still have a slim hope of making it to the knockout stages.

Celtic’s Georgios Giakoumakis put the home side ahead in the 34th minute before the Scottish champions were brought down.

Arsenal target Mykhaylo Mudryk restored parity for the away team, with a superb solo goal.

The 21-year-old collected the ball from 40 yards out, cut inside, then unleashed a ferocious effort from the edge of the box, giving Joe Hart no chance.

However, the time to take the lead came, and it was surely a time to forget who came in the 72nd minute.

Sikan, who came into play 15 minutes earlier, had the goal at his mercy just a few meters away.

The forward, with plenty of time and space, should have taken a throw-in and rolled the ball into the empty net.

But, inexplicably, his first touch escaped and the ball was eventually taken out of play for a goal kick – much to the delight of Celtic fans who cheered and provided Sikan plenty of stick after his howl.

“It’s the worst miss I’ve ever seen in the Champions League,” said talkSPORT reporter David Tanner.

“I don’t know if he was caught in two minds, but he controlled the ball badly and instead of putting it in the empty net, the ball dribbled.

“Celtic were spared, but what a miss. You’ll see this in clip shows until the end of time.

Sikan’s failure means his side need a win in their last game to qualify, while opponents Leipzig need at least a point to advance to the last 16.
