After Passing by, a hit on the platform released in 2021, the 35-year-old director once again tackles comedy and pushes the whimsical and the extravagance even further. The pitch? Youssef, a scam pro, meets Stéphanie during a poker game. The latter is preparing to become a millionaire thanks to cryptocurrency: he thus sees a golden opportunity to wipe off his debts. He’s trying to get closer to her… But what if the crook was being defrauded? Between bloody score-settling, chases in various settings and a burlesque love story, this romantic comedy with sometimes (too) schoolboy humor can amuse but often bores, as it repeats the caricatured codes of the Netflix comedy.

Julien Royal is back after Passing by

Julien Royal’s latest film, Passing by, was a real hit on the streaming platform. Despite some criticism, to which actor Fred Testot had responded, the former web series transformed into a feature film had been talked about. In this new project we find a headliner from this first comedy: Nassim Lyes. The actor and director seem visibly inseparable. The two films thus exude this same madness, this freedom and this spirit of a comic book universe where everything is always pushed to the extreme. In both cases, we almost have the impression of having landed in the middle of a big frenzy between friends – which is not far from reality.

Zoé Marchal: perfect in Julien Royal’s film

The strong point of the film: its casting. But if Guillaume Canet or Panayotis Pascot – who recently became a writer – have small roles, it is Nassim Lyes and Zoé Marchal who are at the top of the bill. The latter especially, endearing and particularly funny, shines in the film. The daughter of Olivier Marchal and Catherine Marchal, often accused of nepobaby, however, there is definitely a place for it. His father keeps repeating it: “she doesn’t need me to work”. We do want to believe it. Because if this comedy is far from being that of the year, the 25-year-old actress gives us a flawless performance and continues her good momentum after the series Skam, Disappeared and recently Tapiewhere she plays another Stephanie: the businessman’s daughter.
