A backward campaign for many candidates

“There was no campaign. We did not really enter the campaign”, regrets Philippe Moreau-Chevrolet. “It’s not just Emmanuel Macron’s fault. Even the established candidates didn’t seem to believe it for a very long time. The only ones who believe in it in the end are Mélenchon and Le Pen. They have been preparing for it for a long time. And it is no coincidence that they have the possibility of reaching the second round. The others gave the impression, including on the right, of winning, but really hopeless . It’s a backwards campaign.”

Macron, he led an “avoidance campaign”

President Macron was very present but the candidate Macron shunned the media. For Gaspard Gantzer, he did not really take advantage of his position as a warlord, with the conflict in Ukraine, since “it was imposed on him a little by circumstances”. “And then, I think when he wanted to go into the campaign and when he filed his candidacy, he realized that he had a big lead in the polls. It’s as if he was leading 4-0 at half time so he said to himself ‘Why? Why bother? Why bother?’, as he had said himself at the Parisian. So he did a non-campaign, an avoidance campaign.”

The former adviser to President Hollande affirms that Emmanuel Macron nevertheless “underestimated the fact that the war in Ukraine would stun the French for a long time but that at some point the diplomatic, military and media effect would fade and that we would be talking about something else, in this case purchasing power”.
