The gap between the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and the third, which is called a “precautionary dose,” is expected to be nine to 12 months, official sources said on Sunday. Details of the gaps for the vaccines currently in use in India’s Covishield and Covaxin inoculation program are being worked out, and a final decision on this will be made soon, they said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a televised address to the nation on Saturday evening, announced that the COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 15 to 18 will begin from January 3, while the “precautionary dose” for frontline and healthcare workers would be administered from Jan. 10. The decisions came amid an increase in Covid cases linked to the Omicron variant of the virus.

Modi said the precautionary dose will also be available for citizens over 60 and with co-morbidities on the advice of their doctor from January 10 next year as well. The precautionary dose refers to a third dose of the vaccine for people who are fully vaccinated, but Modi refrained from using the term “booster dose” as it is commonly referred to.

“The gap between the second and the precautionary dose of the Covid vaccine will likely be nine to 12 months, with the Immunization Division and the National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NTAGI) discussing on these lines,” a source said. . Over 61% of India’s adult population has received both doses of the vaccine. Likewise, about 90 percent of the adult population received the first dose.

With the administration of 32,90,766 doses of vaccine in the past 24 hours, the cumulative doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered in the country topped 141.37 crore, according to provisional reports until 7 a.m.
