The exorbitantly priced towel skirt, Balenciaga’s latest coup

Known for its avant-garde approach to fashion, the fashion house Balenciaga caused a sensation by launching a one-of-a-kind skirt, since it resembles a towel. Marketing plan or real object of desire? Decryption.
Specialist in provocation, Demna Gvasalia, artistic director of the house of Balenciaga, continues his fashion foray with a new object that is causing a stir: a towel skirt. Between exorbitant prices, a good dose of humor and a real sense of style, focus on this fashion UFO.
If the latest campaigns evoking the BDSM universe and featuring children with accessories with a sexual connotation had raised a wave of indignation against Balenciaga, its artistic director, Demna Gvasalia, had since wished to be more discreet and concentrate on craftsmanship and know-how.
More sober perhaps, but no less creative, Demna Gvasalia then comes closer to the vision of the founder, specialist in cuts and design, Cristóbal Balenciaga. The result is notable fashion shows, led by emblematic personalities such as the actress Isabelle Huppert, or even Michelle Yeoh, recently appointed ambassador, as well as new lines, such as the latest collection of skiwear shot at the beach.
A terry towel as a skirt
This season, the brand is revealing a new piece that is generating a lot of buzz. Part of the Spring 2024 collection, this terrycloth skirt faithfully imitates the look and texture of a bath towel, with details such as evocative pleats and raised borders.
This unique approach to design reflects Demna Gvasalia’s desire to challenge traditional fashion conventions and highlight stylistic dualities.
Offered for pre-order at the price of 695 euros, this piece is presented on the Balenciaga website, layered over pants and combined with clogs Mule Sunday in black leather. Unisex, it also supports the trend of men’s skirts and bold layering.
In terms of color, the brand reveals two very classic shades, a beige and a solid navy blue. Note also the “fashion” details of this controversial piece, such as the internal belt with adjustable buckle.
This Towel skirt therefore joins the list of very surprising fashion objects signed Balenciaga. We remember the sneakers Mule Paris in torn blue denim, resembling soiled shoes, or the “trash bag” handbag, unveiled during the fall-winter 2022 fashion show. The brand is therefore surely not at its last blow .
