A 28-1 shot, the Willie Mullins-trained runner was actually a clear winner under jockey Danny Mullins on Boxing Day.
He looked like he was traveling well on the turn and that is what turned out when he returned home away from Clan Des Obeaux, as his trainer Paul Nicholls swept the honors from the square with Saint Calvados third and Frodo fourth.
Winner’s team-mate Asterion Forlonge would have made the frame if he hadn’t crashed at the last moment, while Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Minella Indo disappointed and 3-1 favorite Chantry House was pulled out .
The winning driver told ITV Racing: “I didn’t think he was totally out of the question because he always had a promise to deliver something like that.
“I knew he was having a squeak and was pulling away from the stands the second time he started to come to life. In the back, I was able to keep filling him.
“When it got to the last one it started to idle and I wouldn’t have minded Asterion hitting me as I think I had a little left – but I was pretty happy to. be left alone in front.
“When you ride for Willie you always have a chance no matter what their prize. I was lucky enough to ride a Grade One winner for him the other week at a high price, you always have a chance.
“This year has been a great year for me, lots of winners at big festivals and to top it off with the King George it’s awesome. It’s one of the races of the season.”
