Less than a decade after the deaths of 20 children and six Sandy Hook employees, another brutal gun attack at an American school has shocked the world.
On this occasion, 19 children and two teachers were killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
Tragically, these two incidents are far from isolated or unique.
This map shows all school shootings in the United States that have resulted in death or serious injury over the past fifty years.

The number of people seriously injured or killed in these incidents has increased rather than decreased in recent years.
Last year was the bloodiest on record, and 2022 will be even worse if shootings continue at the same pace as this year so far, according to Sky News’ analysis of data from the Center for Homeland Defense and Security.
The average for the 1970s to 2015 was just under 35 fatalities or injuries per year.
Since 2016, that average has tripled to more than 112, despite schools being closed for part of that time due to the coronavirus.
In 2020, children in the United States were more likely to die from being shot with a gun than from any other cause of death.
More gun deaths in states with weaker gun safety
After Sandy Hook in 2012, then-President Barack Obama worked to reform gun control law to try to prevent further incidents.
President Joe Biden, then Obama’s vice president, responded to the latest attack by conduct appeals to colleagues, “pleading” with them to take action against gun violence.
Measures proposed a decade ago for tougher background checks on people buying guns rather than something close to an outright ban were defeated in the Senate. President Obama called the day “shameful” for Washington.
This graph shows how there are more gun deaths in states with more lax gun control laws, as defined by Everytown Research and Policy, a nonprofit advocacy group on the gun control.
How does the United States compare to other countries?
The United States is an incredible exception internationally when it comes to both the number of guns in the country and the number of mass shooting incidents.
There are nearly 400 million civilian-owned firearms in circulation in the United States, more than 40% of the global total and equivalent to 120 firearms for every 100 people, according to the Small Arms Survey.
The average for the rest of the world is 6 per 100 people.
Just by looking at the number of school shootings, CNN research showed there were 288 recorded in the United States between 2009 and 2018.
The next country with the highest number was Mexico, with 8.
Adding up all the incidents from the other 26 major countries they looked at during the study, there were 45.
The US population makes up about 1 in 15 of the countries in the study total, but was responsible for 13 out of 15 school shootings.
