Texas grave sinking: Son fights with San Jacinto Memorial Park and Funeral Home over his mother’s plot

CLOVERLEAF, TX (KTRK) — A grieving son said a cemetery in northeast Harris County was not keeping his mother’s grave in good condition.

To his surprise, he said management told him it was his responsibility to report issues when he saw them.

David Gilliland is heartbroken. Her mother, Billie Joyce Baker, died in September.

Within months, his headstone at the San Jacinto Memorial Park and Funeral Home began to sink with holes around it.

“It looked like someone almost dug it up,” Gilliland said. “It was heartbreaking to see him like this.”

Gilliland said it’s been like this for at least a week. He told ABC13 he paid over $13,000 to bury his mother.

“Anyone who has had to bury a loved one knows it’s expensive, and you have to find that money and get that kind of service from these people here, it’s heartbreaking,” he said.

For him, seeing this during the holidays was heartbreaking.

“It’s a time of year when people mostly miss family and loved ones and they want to come and lay flowers,” he said.

The director didn’t want to speak on camera. However, she apologized to Gilliland and said these issues, which occur when the floor is wet, need to be reported before anything is done.

“For the lady to tell me that someone has to report it to fix it, that’s not acceptable to me,” Gilliland said.

ABC13 had questions for management.

We wanted to know if crews were monitoring the area, and if so, how often.

They wouldn’t answer any questions in person and directed us to their legal department.

“I’m going to be lying there one day. And if someone doesn’t take care of that, then I’m going to be lying in a place, like I saw my mother and the rest of my family, and it’s sad “, did he declare.

Crews finally showed up on Wednesday to repair her mother’s grave.

He warns others who may also have relatives buried here.

“You find that your family member’s burial place is not being taken care of properly, you have to go to the main office to complain. Otherwise they won’t fix it,” he said .
