YouTube deleted the British media channel Novara on October 26 before putting it back online a few hours later. The channel’s suspension sparked a lot of backlash in the UK.
New case of censorship or a simple mistake? The YouTube platform deleted the British media channel Novara in the morning of October 26 before putting it back online a few hours later.
Founded in 2011 by James Butler and Aaron Bastani, Novara has often sparked heated debate over its far-left editorial stance and its favorable treatment of the Labor Party and its leader Jeremy Corbyn.
In a first statement posted on Twitter following the suspension, Novara said their channel had been “removed without warning or explanation.” “We play an important public service role and regularly publish interviews with political figures, human rights activists, scientists and activists from around the world,” they said.
“Congratulations to the defenders of online censorship”
The channel’s removal sparked several reactions among the British political and media class. On his Twitter account, Labor MP Richard Burgon criticized the American giant’s decision: “What’s going on on YouTube? I am asking this question as an elected member of the UK Parliament. ”
Same tone from journalist Glenn Greenwald: “Congratulations to the defenders of online censorship: it is the system of repression and arbitrary silence that you have created!”
Google has deleted one of the best and largest left-wing media outlets in the UK. No warning or explanation was provided. Just zapped it out of existence.

Has the mobilization on social networks pushed YouTube to reverse its decision? Shortly after the wave of indignation, the channel’s account was again accessible. In a second press release published after the channel was put back online, Novara Media praised “the deluge of support” which made it possible to cancel the suspension. For the British media, YouTube’s decision to suspend it poses a problem of democracy. “That [la suspension] only highlights the glaring inequalities existing between content creators and streaming platforms, a situation detrimental for a healthy public sphere and free media, ”the statement said.
Quoted by the British site Press Gazette, journalist Michael Walker – who hosts the channel’s broadcasts on current affairs and politics – believes that the possibility “that an American giant of technology could suppress us without warning or explanation is a threat to democracy ”.
This is not the first time that YouTube has suspended the channel of a British media. Last January, the conservative media channel Talkradio was suspended before being restored 24 hours later.
