HBO’s “House of the Dragon” star Emily Carey recently opened up about her discomfort with filming uncomfortable sex scenes for the show.

Carey, who plays Alicent Hightower in the fantasy series, appeared on Sunday night’s episode with her much older husband – King Viserys (played by Paddy Considine) – in several intimate scenes.

The first scene shows her helping him bathe in a tub. In the second, she looks visibly uncomfortable as she lies beneath him in his bed while they have sex.

Speaking about the nearly 30-year age gap, Carey shared that she was “still 17” at the time of casting and 18 when filming began.

In a recent interview with Newsweek, she revealed she was “scared” to do the scenes with Considine, then 47.

“We have an intimacy coordinator who was amazing,” Carey told the outlet. “Again, being still 17, the first scene I read from the show was my sex scene and my intimacy scenes, which include the scene where I bathe the king – anything that felt intimate was considered like an intimate scene, which I thought was great.”

On film and television sets, “intimacy coordinators” are responsible for ensuring the well-being of actors who take part in on-screen sex scenes.

“But, it scared me, because by then I still hadn’t met Paddy, I didn’t know how happy he was and how good he was going to do. [the scene]and all I saw was, you know, a 47-year-old man and I was a little worried,” she continued.

“And having this outlet from the intimacy coordinator, so you can talk about everything and not be shunned, or not feel uncomfortable, or not feel like, ‘Oh, that’s not your job. . I don’t mean to make you uncomfortable, but can I ask you… “it was never none of that, it was just this open dialogue,” Carey added.

The 19-year-old then shared that despite her apprehension, the ordeal was “much easier than I thought”.

Carey – who also revealed she had never watched the show’s precursor ‘Game of Thrones’ before being cast – said she was ‘nervous’ about ‘rough sex’ themes when she finally watched the series during the pre-production period.

“I’ve never seen ‘game of thrones’ before, and so during the pre-production period, I sat down trying to watch [it] and of course the first season, even just the first episode of ‘thrones,’ there is a lot of violence against women,” she said. “There is a lot of rough sex and it made me nervous. I was like, ‘Oh my God, what am I going to have to do on this show?’ »

Carey isn’t the only actor surprised by the abundance of steamy scenes.

In August, Matt Smithwho plays Prince Daemon Targaryen on the show, told British Rolling Stone that he thinks the multitude of sex scenes his character appears in is “a bit too much, if you ask me”.

The prequel to the series, “Game of Thrones”, has also found its way under fire for his risque nudity in recent years.

Late last year, actress Gemma Whelan, who played Yara Greyjoy on the show, called the show’s sex scenes a “frantic mess” in an interview with The Guardian.
