Syria denounced the renewal by the Turkish Parliament of the authorization given to the government to conduct military operations on its territory, believing that Ankara’s policy “threatens the peace and security of the region”.

Syria denounced on October 30 the renewal of Turkish operations on its territory. The Turkish Parliament had in fact renewed on October 26 for two years the authorization given to the government to conduct “cross-border” military operations in Iraq and Syria, targeting the jihadist group Daesh and any organization considered by Ankara as “terrorist”.

The current mandate, regularly renewed since 2013, expires on October 31. “Syria strongly denounces the decision of the Turkish Parliament […], the policy of the head of the Turkish regime now constitutes a threat to peace and security in the region, ”said a source from the Syrian Foreign Ministry.

The source, quoted by the public agency Sana, stigmatized the continuation of “military aggressions” by Turkey on Syrian territory, “in violation of UN resolutions”.

The Turkish army has been deployed since 2016 in northwestern Syria around Afrin and in the Idleb region, one of the last pockets escaping Damascus control.

Ankara has launched, with the help of Syrian auxiliaries, three large-scale operations in recent years (2016-2017, in 2018 and in October 2019) along its border, on the Syrian side, where many Kurds live.

The stated objective is in particular to push back the Daesh group and the fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the main Kurdish militia in Syria, considered by Ankara as the extension in Syria of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). . This Kurdish organization has been leading a guerrilla war since 1984 against Ankara, which qualifies it as “terrorist”.

If the United States also considers the PKK as a terrorist organization, it nonetheless supports Kurdish militias in Syria as part of their fight against Daesh. The American presence in Syria is also criticized by Damascus and Russia, which contest its legality from the point of view of international law.
