CONCORD, NH — A shooting at a New Hampshire psychiatric hospital Friday left “multiple victims” and one shooter dead, authorities said.
A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that in addition to the shooter, one person was shot in the lobby. The official was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.
“Although the scene remains active while the campus is cleared, the suspect is deceased. The state immediately mobilized, and first responders and law enforcement are on scene.” » Governor Chris Sununu said in a statement. “We will provide as much detail as possible as the situation develops.”
State police said there were “multiple victims” in an alert posted on social media Friday afternoon, but did not give a number or say whether there were any dead.
New Hampshire Hospital in Concord, with approximately 185 beds, is the state’s only public adult psychiatric hospital. It is located in the capital city of Concord, near Concord High School, several state agencies, and a district courthouse. It is located on a large campus comprising over one hundred acres (40.5 hectares) of land.
At a news conference Friday evening, police said the shooting was contained to the lobby and that all patients were safe.
Friday’s shooting is the latest act of violence at a US hospital. Medical centers across the country have struggled to adapt to growing threats, which has helped make health care one of the most violent fields in the country.
