A 26-year-old man was allegedly shot by his brother-in-law and his friend over an interfaith marriage in the Model Town area of northwest Delhi, police said on Sunday. The victim, Deva, who runs a gym in Adarsh Nagar, is currently undergoing treatment here at a hospital, they said.

Police said he was attacked by his brother-in-law Shahnawaz alias Shahbaz (21), a resident of Jahangirpuri, and his friend Harshit alias Hrithik (20), a resident of the Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh. Police said they received the information around midnight that a man was lying on the road with a gunshot wound near the Shalimar Park area of Model Town. The wounded man was taken to hospital and his condition is serious, police said. In their investigation, the police found that the defendant Shahnawaz is the brother of the victim’s wife and is a friend of Harshit. Shanawaz was angry that his sister had married a man from another community against her family’s wishes, so he hatched a plan and brought his friend, a senior police officer said.

The couple have been married for nearly four to five months, the officer said. To execute their plan, the two defendants called Deva for a meeting with a view to eliminating him.

Deputy Police Commissioner Usha Rangnani (Northwest) said an investigation revealed that Deva with two passengers arrived on a motorcycle at the scene of the incident. The two horsemen, Shahnawaz and Hrithik, shot him with locally made pistols and fled the scene, he said. “We registered a case under section 307 (attempted murder) and 34 (acts carried out by several persons to promote a common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and other sections of the Gun Law. Several teams were formed and launched an investigation. Within six hours of reporting the incident, we captured and arrested the two defendants, Rangnani said. Shahnawaz and Harshit were arrested on Sunday and the pistols they used in the incident, including a real cartridge, were recovered from their possession. , said.

The motorcycle, an Enfield Bullet, from the victim was also recovered from his possession, he said, adding that both defendants have confessed to their crime.
