On Friday, June 24, the movement for choice and freedom received a destructive blow. The annulment of Roe v. Wade means the dismantling of a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body and the end of a nearly 50-year-old constitutional right. This decision ends essential health care and moves towards the criminalization of millions of people.

This Supreme Court, like the Republican Party which confirmed them, is out of step with the will of the people. Senator McConnell made it clear that a national abortion ban was possible and called Friday’s decision “courageous and correct.”

EMILY’s List has been raising alarm bells for years, and we’re not surprised by Friday’s decision. However, we are ready for the fight of our lives.

SUPREME COURT OVERHEADS ROE V. WADE IN HISTORIC OPINION

As I reflect on that dark day and watch federal protections fall into the hands of the states, my charge and the mission of EMILY’s List are clearer than ever, and it must be a shared vision to work. . We MUST elect pro-choice Democratic women, especially at the state and local levels.

Here’s why.

In states like New York and Michigan, it is pro-choice Democratic women who are working overtime to protect women’s rights.

To prepare for the influx of women who will likely come to New York for abortions, New York Attorney General Letitia James has worked to create a state fund to pay abortion providers and offset costs for low-income and uninsured or underinsured patients. ; making New York a safe haven for those seeking to access care.

SUPREME COURT RULING PROVES WE WERE NOT ‘HYSTERIC’, WE ARE RIGHT

In Michigan, even before that decision, Governor Gretchen Whitmer filed a lawsuit seeking to keep abortion legal in her state in case that day comes. On Friday, she reaffirmed her commitment, saying she “will fight like hell to protect every Michigander’s right to make decisions about their own body with the guidance of a trusted medical professional.”

And for those who believe their votes don’t matter, I would direct them to states like Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico, where to elect enough pro-choice Democratic women to the state legislature. meant protecting abortion rather than rolling back our rights.

Pro-choice Democrat elected officials are also using their lived experience to speak on behalf of the millions without a voice right now.

Throughout the day, I stood in awe of elected officials like Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., who continued to share her abortion story to show the human impact this decision will have on people. from all over the country.

Rep. Marie Newman, D-Ill., who in 2020 defeated one of the last anti-choice Democrats, recently shared her abortion story. She felt compelled to do so after the draft notice leaked.

Pro-choice Democratic women elected at the state and local levels are doing the same.

Rochelle Garza is running for Texas Attorney General. Garza sued the Trump administration in 2017 on behalf of an undocumented teenager who sought access to an abortion.

Our vote is our voice. In November, in every state in the country, abortion will be on the ballot and we must vote like him.

These women are taking their deeply personal lived experiences, their stories of fighting for the rights of others, and bringing them into the halls of power. They literally come into play.

They are elected officials with this kind of courage that I want to represent me and my daughter.

Friday, June 24 made one thing clear to me: Republicans won’t stop at this extremism, so we can’t stop fighting. Our vote is our voice. In November, in every state in the country, abortion will be on the ballot and we must vote like him.

Friday was decision day that my team and I had been preparing for since before the draft notice leaked in May.

I am sad and angry, but we are ready. If you’re reading this and feel like the majority of Americans, then you know that electing pro-choice Democratic women where you live will be your first line of defense.
