Stephen Humphreys scores a sensational goal from inside his own half

There are still three months of fixtures to go for Scottish club Hearts, but Stephen Humphrys scored what is already being hailed as ‘the goal of the season’ on Saturday.

After taking possession at the edge of his team’s own penalty area, Humphrys edged past two defenders and found himself in open space.

But with four defenders covering him, he lined up a shot on goal still inside his own half, and the ball flew past the Dundee keeper’s taut grip in the net.

“No way, no way…” exclaimed the Hearts TV commentators as Humphrys tossed the ball down the field. The second it took the ball close to the net, their world seemed to explode with joy. “He scored in his own half! It’s incredible!”

Humphrys later told BBC Scotland that he would “probably FaceTim(ing) my mum and dad on the road, then a Chinese meal, a bath, then a bed. Love Island isn’t airing tonight, so I won’t be watching that…”

His marvelous goal sealed a 3-1 victory for Hearts, as the Scottish club overturned a 1-0 deficit to defeat Dundee United 10.

“The first part boils it down to a tee; pace and power to get away from defenders,” manager Robbie Nielsen told the club’s website. “The finish is just sensational. I think time has slowed down a bit, for everyone in the stadium. It will be the goal of the season, for sure.

Dundee had led early but defender Ryan Edwards was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle after just 29 minutes, putting the Jam Tarts back in the game.

Shankland equalized for Hearts in the 71st minute before Cochrane gave the Edinburgh club a late lead and Humphrys’ howitzer sealed the victory.

Hearts’ win consolidates third place in the Scottish Premiership table, seven points ahead of fourth-placed Livingston.
