While Starfield was released in September, it is already no longer the most played Bethesda game currently on Steam. Despite its qualities, the latest from the studio behind The Elder Scrolls and the latest Fallout is overtaken by a cult title released more than a decade ago…
Released on September 6, Starfield is the big end-of-year cartridge for Bethesda and Microsoft, its new owner since 2021. If the title was well received by critics with a score of 83/100 on Metacritic and a score of 17/20 in our columns, player reception is more mixed with an overall index of 7.0/10 on Metacritic. Now that the game has been out for more than two months, players have had time to form their own opinion, and the least we can say is that we are observing an astonishing situation.

Skyrim still popular ten years later
On Steam, there are currently more players playing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim than Starfield. At the time of writing, Skyrim has a player peak over the last 24 hours of 24,720 players, when adding the base game and the Special Edition, while Starfield has 21,989 players over the same period. And all this without counting the players who are on the VR version of the game. Obviously, this is not a major difference, but we must still remember that Skyrim was released more than ten years ago now and has been entitled to multiple reissues. So, rather than venturing into space, Steam players prefer to explore the lands of Skyrim again and again which continue to be enriched with the numerous mods which are regularly added.

However, these figures must be qualified in several respects. First of all, we must remember that Starfield was also released on Xbox Series and especially in Xbox Game Pass, which means that the Steam figures do not represent all the players who have tried Bethesda’s space adventure, but only part. Enough to seriously skew these attendance figures because Xbox Game Pass subscribers have no interest in purchasing the game alongside since they can play it without additional cost in their subscription. Nevertheless, These numbers are best interpreted as evidence of Skyrim’s popularity. which, more than a decade after its release, remains one of the most played games as its proposition was able to conquer the hearts of players at its launch.
