Slovenia elects Melania Trump’s former lawyer as first female president – POLITICO

Lawyer Nataša Pirc Musar won a runoff on Sunday to become Slovenia’s first female president, according to preliminary results.

With nearly all the votes counted, Pirc Musar edged out right-wing conservative former foreign minister Anže Logar by 54% to 46%, according to media reports. A prominent attorney, Pirc Musar had represented former US First Lady Melania Trump in copyright and other cases in her native Slovenia.

His victory strengthens the country’s liberal bloc after the victory of the centre-left coalition in the Slovenian legislative elections in April.

“My first task will be to open a dialogue between all Slovenians,” Pirc Musar said as his election team celebrated, the Associated Press reported.

Logar conceded defeat, saying he hopes Pirc Musar “keeps all the promises” she made during the campaign.

Pirc Musar, 54, will be the first woman to serve as president since Slovenia gained independence from the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991.
