Six Generations of Family Honored at 54th Annual Menominee Pow Wow

KESHENA – For many people, the best part of any powwow is the food and the dancing.

For Mary Fish, the powwow is more of a family reunion. Fish has attended the Menominee Pow Wow for decades. Now she can come back to the same place and watch her grandchildren celebrate the same traditions.

Although many things have remained the same, there have been some changes. Fish said he noticed changes in dancers’ dress style.

There have also been some pretty big changes in the Fish family. She added 303 grandchildren to the family. It’s been six generations in the family who all live together.

Having six generations of a family living at the same time is a rare feat. The family said they heard from a few other people around the world.

This family reunion is something Fish says he enjoys. She said it’s not often that she sees so many family members in one place.

A special ceremony was held Saturday afternoon to honor the family’s accomplishments and legacy. It included a special dance and a gift from the tribe.
