Oleksandr Usyk’s promoter Alex Krassyuk uses Tyson Fury’s own words against him.
On Friday, it was announced that the undisputed heavyweight world title showdown between the two champions would not take place on February 17 as planned because the Briton suffered a serious cut in his fight.
A statement from Fury said: “I am absolutely devastated after preparing for this fight for so long and being in such superb condition.
“I feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event and will work diligently to set the date once the eye has healed.
“I can only apologize to everyone involved, including my own team, Team Usyk, the undercard fighters, partners and fans as well as our hosts and my friends in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
The fight will now be delayed, with the new date currently unknown.
Usyk’s team fired after the news broke, as his manager Egis Klimas lashed out at Fury.
Klimas told Ring Magazine: “Tyson Fury is a fucking coward who will do anything not to face Usyk, and he had his bitch hit him with a frying pan in the forehead. You can quote me word for word for that. “
Usyk’s promoter, Alex Krassyuk, took his time before issuing a public response.
On Saturday, he went live on Instagram to answer fans’ questions about the situation.
At one point during his 40-minute broadcast, Krassyuk read an old tweet sent by Fury in 2013.
At the time, the young Gypsy King was scheduled to face David Haye, but he withdrew a week before the fight due to a cut suffered during sparring.
Fury didn’t take the news well and insinuated that Haye had deliberately engineered the situation to avoid it.
Krassyuk read the tweet which read: “The cut is genuine. Correct. You can’t box with the cut. Correct. Needs to be rescinded. That’s why he was cut so he can retire. S***house. “
Haye himself even commented on this situation, more than ten years after their canceled fight.
He said: “Fury suffered a cut a few weeks before the fight.
“I know this pain very well: in 2013, when I was supposed to fight Tyson Fury, I suffered a cut.
“And oh, I didn’t hear the last of him.
“Actually, I remember at the time thinking, ‘I hope one day before one of his big fights he has to go through this, he was such a dick about it.’ and here we are.
“But I don’t feel very well at all.”
