Videos have circulated on Twitter and Chinese social media platform Weibo of what appears to be a drone hovering in the sky, broadcasting Covid lockdown guidelines to quarantined residents.

One clip in particular shows a drone with flashing red lights hovering over apartment buildings, broadcasting a message out loud. The original poster for the video stated that the clip was shot in a residential area of ​​Shanghai.

“Everyone, don’t sing songs on your balcony. The people of Songjiang Jiuting Park sang a little, then a drone came to say to control the desire for freedom in your soul,” read the poster’s caption. on the video.

In the video, the drone is seen flying over buildings and a robotic voice broadcasts the message: “Residents of Jiuting. During the pandemic, we ask that you strictly adhere to COVID-19 restrictions and related guidelines. Control the desire for freedom of your soul. Do not open the window or sing. This increases the risk of transmission of COVID-19.”

Other drones were also seen flying over neighborhoods in Shanghai, prompting some posters who filmed videos of the drones to call it “a preview of Cyberpunk 2077”, referring to the dystopian video game.

In other clips on the Twitter-like Weibo platform, drones delivering messages to students were seen taking off. These drones were broadcasting messages that indicated that due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, one should keep face masks on at all times and stay within the confines of their college dorms.

It’s not just drones that are deployed in Shanghai. Videos of robot dogs trotting through the empty streets of Shanghai have also been uploaded to Weibo.

A robot dog was spotted carrying a loudspeaker from which the COVID-19 lockdown guidelines were broadcast.

“Disinfect regularly. Ventilate your home. Prevent the pandemic in a scientific way”, intoned the broadcast message, in an equally robotic voice.

Shanghai is currently grappling with a marked rise in COVID-19 cases, prompting the entire city of 26 million to be placed under strict lockdown amid mandatory mass testing for the virus. The city’s Covid-zero policy, however, drew attention after disturbing videos emerged of infants and toddlers being left unattended at a crowded quarantine center in the city – a move the Chinese government has defended.

The city’s mass testing regime has revealed more than 94,000 infections in the southern financial hub since March 1, according to the South China Morning Post.
