‘Shadow and Bone’ Boss Teases ‘Six of Crows’ Spinoff and Season 3 Villain

shadow and bone Season 2 may have just landed on Netflix, but showrunner Eric Heisserer has said so Newsweek on his plans for the future of the franchise.

The new episodes adapt the second and third books of Leigh Bardugo’s original trilogy, titled Siege and storm And Ruin and uprising respectively. They also include elements of Six of Ravens And twisted kingdombut leave out an important plot of beloved works.

Fans of Bardugo’s books will recognize that the series has set up a Six of Ravens spin-off that will focus on the Crows’ heist at Fjerda’s Ice Court. The script involves Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter), Inej Ghafa (Amita Suman), Jesper Fahey (Kit Young), Wylan Hendricks (Jack Wolfe), Nina Zenik (Danielle Galligan), and Matthias Helvar (Calahan Skogman). This, Heisserer said, was intentional.

The show’s second season ends with Kaz telling Jesper, Wylan, and Nina about a new job they’ve been given, which will see them rescue a Grisha from the impenetrable fortress of Fjerdan. The Grisha created a drug known as Jurda Parem, which increases a Grisha’s powers tenfold but is also very dangerous, as seen in the finale.

“If we manage to manage, because there are a lot of mouths to feed, the best thing to do is to let us Six of Ravens as a standalone season and really spending time with these characters,” Heisserer said. “And then Mothership Season 3 allows us to spend a lot of time with our entire Ravkan contingent.”

The Ravkan Contingent, as Heisserer describes them, involves characters like Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), Nikolai Lantsov (Patrick Gibson), Zoya Nazyalensky (Sujaya Dasgupta), Mal Oretsev (Archie Renaux) and others who remained in Ravka .

The showrunner explained that season 3 of shadow and bone would take place largely at the same time as the Six of Ravens spin-off, and the last scene of the finale is particularly relevant.

He explained, “These storylines will overlap at least somewhat, because there’s a scene in Season 2 that basically lands the same night as Hringkälla [an annual event in Fjerda]which means that a good part of Six of Ravens will happen at that time.

“But then it just moves on from there, and the fun will be when these characters can cross paths again, and when we can kind of Meeting vigilantes everyone against a common major enemy.”

“The Thanos of the Grishaverse is a closely guarded secret that we can’t wait to access, if we ever get the chance,” Heisserer said, adding that the villain they’ve chosen will be one fans of the books are familiar with. . with but he would not give more details.

Season 2 of shadow and bone is also preparing its next season to adapt the king of scars Bardugo’s franchise duology, which focuses on Nikolai’s reign over Ravka and his struggle with a dark secret.

The books also brought Zoya to the fore, and Heisserer praised Dasgupta, “I hope she’s ready because she’ll be a mainstay in this story.”

Fans may also wonder exactly how the Crows will fare without Inej who, in the series, ends season 2 by going to sea in order to target slave ships that may know the whereabouts of his brother.

Heisserer was quick to reassure viewers that the Wraith won’t be separated from the crew for long: “The scene on the Volkvolny [ship] with Inej chasing the slave ship occurs several weeks before Kaz’s voiceover, so in case of Six of Ravens Inej storyline will be back with the team soon enough and we’ll get an idea of how the timeline evolved and what happened.”

Why A “Crooked Kingdom” Storyline Is Used In Season 2 And What It Means For The Future

Season 2 also did something fans might have expected: it used a major storyline from twisted kingdomthe second book of Six of Ravens duology. It was Kaz’s plot for revenge against Pekka Rollins (Dean Lennox Kelly), who double-crossed him and his brother Jordie as a child and left them for dead.

Heisserer explained that using the script was “the result of hundreds of hours of discussion with the writer’s room” and was not a decision taken lightly.

“I don’t think I can properly sum up all those hours of intense discussion and debate,” he said. “But I can give you the highlights, which is that we knew they had to deal with the aftermath of Pekka Rollins’ betrayal in Season 1 and we also knew they would have issues with Dreesen. . [Sean Gilder]and so all of that gave us the ingredients for Season 2 of the kind of consequences they had to deal with.

“For the kind of storylines that we explored that pitted Kaz against Pekka Rollins, what we discovered after a lot of trial and error was that we were basically treading water. We were sort of running for these characters, because we were worried about changing something later that brought us too late or too early in their development.

“We also realized that holding them in place so they’re basically pausing to jump into a Six of Ravens the story meant the characters didn’t grow at all. There were no bows and our poor actors were like, ‘Why? I’m the same person I am at the end of the season and at the start, and you never want to hear that.”

He continued: “When we realized that we had to pay something and move the story forward with Pekka and Kaz, and that meant something – and we also had to explore for a thematic unit the trauma of Kaz [and] its story, which is also deeply tied to Pekka – we thought it best to use a canonical story that takes place in Twisted kingdom.

“But we only made this decision after knowing what we were going to do both in the Crows And twisted kingdom stories, if we ever had the privilege of exploring them.”

It may not have been a decision the writers made easily, but they’ve already thought about how it might shape the characters’ future in the franchise.

Heisserer admitted: “There was, of course, the little little panic at the back of our brains of ‘will we ever get to twisted kingdom? Maybe, maybe not.’ So this may be our only chance to explore that.

“But if we make it, oh my god, Kahn’s Wrath level [story of] Pekka out of Hellgate [prison] and on af****** bender to kill all the Crows is going to be amazing.”

shadow and bone Season 2 is now available on Netflix.
