Seven times “Motormouth” Biplab Deb has courted controversy

Biplab Kumar Deb, who resigned as Chief Minister of Tripura on Saturday, resigned from his post a year before the 2023 elections.

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav and top BJP leader Vinod Tawde will be the central observers in the election of the new chief minister, according to the Indian Express.

Biplab Deb, since her elevation to the position of CM in 2018, has often remained at the center of controversy. He had also held the house wallet and was accused by the opposition of using the police against political rivals.

The Tripura Congress had demanded the resignation of CM Biplab Kumar Deb for the alleged deterioration of law and order in the state. Alleging failure to ensure public safety and government inaction in maintaining public order, Congress leader and former BJP minister Sudip Roy Barman threatened to launch a civil disobedience movement to protest against the sharp increase in lawlessness in the state.

From saying satellites existed in the Mahabharata era to calling Punjabis and Jats ‘less intelligent’, Deb has repeatedly run into controversy for her outrageous comments.

  • In April 2018, while addressing a regional workshop on informatization and reforms, Deb claimed that internet and satellite existed in the Mahabharata era. He said that due to internet and satellite technology, Sanjay could see the war sitting next to Dhritarashtra and told him about the battle.
  • He also interviewed Diana Hayden winning the title of Miss World in 1997 while calling “beauty pageants a farce”. After much criticism, he clarified that his statement came in the context of promoting the state’s handloom industry. Deb has also drawn controversy for her comments about engineers. He suggested that mechanical engineers should not join the civil service. He said only civil engineers should join the public services because they know how to build administration and society.
  • In May 2018, while addressing a rally in Udaipur, Deb falsely claimed that Rabindranath Tagore had returned his Nobel Prize in protest against the British.
  • In April 2019, he incurred the ire of young people in the state by suggesting that unemployed youths open ‘paan shops’ and herd cows for a living instead of chasing after political parties and leaders for government jobs.
  • In November 2019, he was again at the center of yet another controversy for his remarks about the Mughals. Speaking at an award ceremony in the state capital, Agartala, he said many people did not know about the wonders of Tripura as the Mughals tried to destroy the culture of the state by bombarding the art and architecture.
  • During a July 2020 event at the Agartala Press Club, Deb said that Punjabis and Haryanvis are less intelligent. He claimed that the Sardars ‘may be less intelligent’ but very strong and the Jats of Haryana cannot be matched in strength but they have ‘limited brains’. After the controversy, he later apologized in a tweet.
  • In September last year, he again drew heavy criticism from opposition leaders after he claimed “I am a tiger, I control the police”. While addressing the biennial conference of the Association of Civil Service Officers in Tripura, he asked the officers not to worry about contempt of court.
