Schoolchildren flock to this small Christian college that contradicts Ivy League culture

A small Christian college with a large homeschool population is challenging the standards of elite liberal colleges and bringing education back to ‘mental health’, the founder of an alternative SAT told Fox News.

“There’s an abundance of people with college degrees,” Jeremy Tate, founder of the classic learning test, told Fox News. “There is a shortage of people with the kind of work ethic and the kind of integrity that employers are looking for right now.”

Tate, a former college adviser, said well-rounded graduates of Patrick Henry College had a stronger work ethic than their peers from traditional schools and were better disciplined. He attributed their success to the denominational conservative college’s large homeschool population, a ban on devices on campus and a dress code for students.

“They train young people in all the right ways,” Tate said. “It’s a return to reason. It’s a return to common sense.”

Academic rigor, lessons about the American foundation and biblical worldview are the commitments that “set Patrick Henry College apart from any other college in the world,” a PHC spokesperson told Fox News. “PHC prepares its graduates to make an immediate and lasting impact for Christ and for freedom.”

At Patrick Henry, 75% of registered students were homeschooling at the end of their secondary studies, according to the PHC spokesperson. Tate, whose company administers an alternative standardized test to the SAT or ACT for college entrance, said homeschool students who took the CLT exam outperformed their peers in the test.

Homeschoolers got average scores of about 78 points, while private and charter school students scored 75 and 73, respectively, according to a Houston professor’s analysis of CLT data between 2016 and 2021. Public school students scored lowest with an average score of 66.

“Homeschooling is in some ways a bit off the charts,” Tate said. “So when you have that concentration of it in a college…the college itself is able to take that training and develop it.”

Patrick Henry “brings in students who come to college with a great foundation, a great foundation,” he continued. “They’re able to offer a program that’s deep in the basics, deep in the humanities where students graduate, and they kill it on the LSAT.”

In 2021, senior Patrick Henry graduates who took the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) scored an average of 171 — in the 98th percentile for the country, the school spokesperson said. According to US News & World Report, undergraduate students at the nation’s top-rated colleges averaged 171 or higher.

Tate said students are drawn to schools like Patrick Henry because of the college’s emphasis on classical education. He also said that unlike many universities, Patrick Henry does not focus on social justice and “woke” programs.

Nationwide college enrollment is down 4.2% nationwide since 2020, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. But Patrick Henry College has seen an increase in applicants since 2017, according to a university spokesperson.

Tate said some of the college’s rules also contribute to its success.

“You walk around campus and typically they’re not on devices and in class they’re not touching devices,” Tate said. “While you’re sitting in your typical lecture hall at most large public universities and two-thirds of the kids are just scrolling through TikTok or Instagram all the time.”

Patrick Henry’s students also adhere to a dress code.

“You compare it to a lot of college campuses right now where it’s like every day feels like pajama day,” Tate said. “It really changes the culture.”

Tate told Fox News that one-third of his staff are made up of Patrick Henry graduates.

“I can’t hire enough of them,” Tate said. “I think what employers really want is that they want [and] disciplined young people. »
