The caller who ended a conversation with Joe Biden with the right-wing “Let’s go Brandon” meme – which means “Fuck Joe Biden” – insisted he was joking and didn’t want to disrespect the President. .
“At the end of the day, I have nothing against Mr. Biden,” Jared Schmeck, 35, told the Oregonian newspaper. “But I’m frustrated because I think he can do a better job. I don’t want to disrespect him.
Schmeck, of Central Point, also said he was not a “Trumper” but rather an “American free-thinker and follower of Jesus Christ.”
On Christmas Eve, the president and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, called the Santa Tracker of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which every year claims to track the progress of Santa Claus and his reindeer.
A traditional duty for U.S. presidents, in 2018 he was almost bowled over when Donald Trump said that a seven-year belief in Santa Claus was “marginal” at that age.
Biden and Schmeck discussed the gifts Schmeck’s four children hoped to receive, and how one, Hunter, shared a name with the president’s son and grandson. Schmeck said he hoped for a “quiet night”.
Sad Biden: “Very lucky, dad.”
Everyone on the roll laughed.
At the end of the call, Schmeck said, “Merry Christmas and let’s go Brandon.”
“Come on Brandon, I agree,” Biden said, as his wife grimaced.
Biden also said, “By the way, are you in Oregon? Where is your house?
But the call was dropped.
“Let’s go Brandon” was born from an interview with a race car driver by a television reporter who may have misheard the obscene chant of a crowd.
He thrived in right-wing and pro-Trump circles – even promoted by Republican Congressmen and Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
Schmeck and his wife promoted the remark on social media. But they encountered a wave of opprobrium, including a tweet in which California Congressman Eric Swalwell highlighted Biden’s painful personal story.
“I refuse to believe that we are so indecent as a people,” Democrat said wrote. “Not on Christmas Eve. And not to someone who lost his wife and daughter over Christmas. We are better than that. Be nice and merry Christmas.
Schmeck, a former police officer, told the Oregonian he was “under attack for using my freedom of speech.”
He also said he received potentially threatening phone calls himself.
“I understand there is a vulgar meaning to ‘Lets go Brandon’ but I’m not that simple-minded no matter how I feel about him,” Schmeck said.
“[Biden] looks like he’s a cordial guy. There is no animosity or anything like that. It was just an innocent joke to also express my divine right to joke about my frustrations.
Schmeck said the topics fueling these frustrations with Biden included vaccine mandates and supply chain issues.
He also insisted, “I love him like I love any other brother or sister.”
